Preparing to embark on a cruise vacation is an exciting time, particularly for first time cruisers. With so many details coming together however, it can also be overwhelming. There are definitely a few key elements to keep in mind when planning the cruise. Once these elements have been addressed, it's time to kick back and relax!

Passports
Having a passport is an absolute necessity on a world cruise. If you travel to a country requiring one, you have to present it before getting onboard the flight or the cruise ship. As of June 1, 2009 a passport is going to be required for all travel into or out of the United States of America.

Dining Aboard
On the larger upscale world cruises and even those that do not travel the farthest of distances, you'll most likely have three or more dining location options. Usually there is a main dining room, an alternative such as a fancy restaurant, a cafeteria, a buffet or two for breakfast and lunch, and room service. Typically an extra charge applies when you use the alternate restaurant, however. There are normally two different times available for dinner in the main dining area. The earlier sitting takes place at about six o'clock p.m. and the later one is around eight o'clock p.m. When you are in port and traveling off of the boat it may be best to request the later time to allow more time to dress and get ready for dinner. Also, there are special diet requests you can put in but it is best to double-check to see if they can be accommodated. More often than not these types of requests can be, but ample time is needed to prepare for them.

Deciding What to Wear and What to Pack
As obvious as it may seem, it's important to pack clothes that match the weather. Vacations in the northern region of the globe, such as Alaska, will require a sweater and a windbreaker. It is probably best to bring a heavy jacket as well. Shorts or skirts and light weight shirts are good for tropical excursions. There are typically at least two formal nights aboard a seven day luxury cruise. You could wear something like a cocktail dress or suit, or if you prefer, you can go super fancy and wear a gown or tuxedo. It's fun to dress up and mingle with the other guests onboard.

United States Currency Overseas
Generally, U.S. money is acceptable almost everywhere in the western hemisphere. It's a good idea to take small amounts of cash to tip cab drivers, baggage staff, and tour guides. Cruisers may want to consider bringing traveler's checks instead of cash just to be on the safe side.

Shipboard Tipping Procedures
There are now policies in place that allow for a ten to twelve dollar addition to each person's billing in lieu of each one's voluntary gratuities. This helps those staff members who often find themselves in a not so tip-lucrative position. On the other hand, since this dollar amount is added it doesn't even seem like a tip anymore. It could simply be seen as a fare increase minus the cruise establishments upping their advertised prices.

Additional Costs
Unfortunately certain charges exist that you are not previously informed of when you embark on a luxury world cruise, even a four day excursion. Some examples include fuel surcharges, taxes, and fees. Examine the fine print at all times in the brochures. In determining an appropriate budget for your vacation cruise, make sure to include gratuities, tours and outings off of the ship, salon and spa treatments, beauty store purchases, the mini-bar in your room, and your bar expenses. It's all of the little things that people tend to forget to include. They certainly can sneak up on you if you fail to plan ahead for them.

All in all, a cruise is an unforgettable experience. It's a chance to sail the high seas and enjoy luxurious on board amenities that five star world cruises have to offer. Even if you think something as extravagant as one of these cruises is not within your reach, cheaper, more reasonable options exist as well. Of course, the cruise line is a business just like any other, and they are very good at extracting money from you. In a previous article, I outlined the 3 best free things that you can do to enhance your cruise. You should read that article if you have not already. But the topic of this one is to learn how to save money on your cruise by learning where the traps are.

The biggest money trap is obvious, it is the sign and sail card. For those who have not cruised yet, the sign and sail card is issued to every adult on the cruise. You can use it in place of cash on the cruise ship , and just pay the bill at the end of your vacation. You can use it everywhere: In the bar, the gift shop, the casino and coffee shop, just to name a few.

The problem is that it is just like a credit card. Statistically, we will spend 18% more if we only use credit cards because we do not think of it as spending money. The same is true with your sign and sail card. The challenge is that in most places on a ship, you cannot pay cash even if you want to. You cannot hand the waitress any cash on the lido deck, unless you are giving her an additional tip, even the tips are added to the card.

The best way to handle it is to identify the places that you can pay cash and resolve to pay cash there: The casinos, bingo, and tips to the room steward, and dining room waiters are all places where you can and should pay cash.

In addition, I always go to the Pursers desk at least two or three times to pay down my room bill. This reduction in the cash in my wallet is a not too subtle reminder of how much I am spending.

More people are going on cruises. If you think that this is just for couples, think again because Disney World cruises promises to make this a fun filled vacation for the entire family.

Disney world cruises set sail to the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico. Since these destinations are quite close to the mainland, most of these last for just a few days.

Most packages last 8 days and 7 nights with the first 3 days at the amusement park before you get to board the ship. Those who want to stay longer can avail either of the Mediterranean or transatlantic adventures as well.

Unlike other cruises liners, Disney World is quite new in the business and they only have 2 vessels. These are namely the Wonder and the Magic. Both of these have similar features and amenities on board that can hold 2400 guests each. There are plans to add two more ships to the fleet that can hold about 4,000 passengers by 2011 or 2012.

Each night on board one of these ships promise to be different because guests will experience a rotational dining system. This means you will get to eat in one of three dining rooms nightly while most only offer this in one large room.

Meals are already included in the package so the only thing you have to spend for will be drinks. You can avoid this by bringing some on board for the entire trip.

Despite the large number of passengers, you will notice that the state rooms and suites are not cramp making it possible to hold 5 passengers.

There are many things to do on board and to help you out, they have counselors that plan games and other activities. For those who want to spend some time away from the kids, you can ask the crew to assign someone to babysit them.

Given the popularity of Disney World cruises, customers are advised to book their trip at least 6 months in advance. On the day of your departure, make sure you are there at least 2 hours before because they make it a point to leave on time. If you miss your boat, they will try to make arrangements for you to meet up at the port where the ship will be docking. Should there be weather problems, the trip will be rescheduled at a later date.

One thing you should keep in mind when you go for a Disney World cruise or any other is to bring your passport. You are leaving US territory and you have to show this to the customs agent when you make a port call.

The best vacation I ever have taken was on Royal Caribbean's Sovereign of the Seas. I went with my two best friends. We chose the 4 day cruise that went from Monday to Friday morning. I admit I was slightly intimidated when I began reading and viewing pictures of the cruise ship.

I just took my very first cruise before Christmas 2007. I went with very little expectations and have to say Wow and I am definitely going again very soon! Honestly I felt like I might get lost on a big ship.

Granted, I had figured cruises were for mostly the fru, fru's and stuck ups. I was totally wrong. Along with myself, my best friend and his wife went with me and we were all first time cruisers. We drove 10 hours to get to Port Canaveral.

First off, when we arrived to Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida to board the ship, we thought for sure we were going to be waiting a long time having to unload our luggage, park, go through security and checking in.

Wrong!

From the time we arrived at the terminal to the time we boarded the ship was a little over 45 minutes. The lines looked long, however, they moved efficiently and quickly. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We had our Set Sail Passes signed as well as our boarding pass information and health declaration (while in line).

By the time we were on the ship and to the deck where our Oceanview stateroom was located (deck 8) our luggage was sitting waiting on us.

Yes, the room was small. It was very clean though. Our stateroom attendant did not take long to show up and introduce himself.

Just before we left the port we had to have a safety drill. Of course I knew that over 2,000+ guests were on board and I did dread this part because well, not everyone usually cooperates and I figured this was going to delay our departure.

I was so wrong. It was done and over with in about 30 minutes. We left port on time (5pm).

I came to this website to read reviews before going and yes, around the second day there was that musty smell from wet carpet. It did not take long for it to subside though. And, everyday I seen housekeeping vacuuming as well as using a carpet cleaner.

Everyday that we used the make up room card (left in our door), our beds were made up and the carpet vacuumed. And yes, we received animal shaped towels on one of the beds every evening.

Yes, the bathroom is also small, but it was always clean as well.

Let me say this much about the room and bathroom: It may be small, but they made it as comfortable as they can. Besides, there are plenty of things to do on the ship so majority of the time you are not in the room anyways!

Eating is not a problem. We ate at the Windjammer for lunch once we got settled in. The food was great and the service was awesome. I got Chinese food along with some chop sticks. It did not take long for one of the Asian waiters to come over and patiently work with me teaching me how to use the chop sticks!

Our assigned Dining room was the Mirage, late seating (8:30). While that time seems late it really wasn't. In fact, it was perfect timing. You don't go hungry on the ship. The food was great every single night.

And if for some reason you are not happy, they'll quickly get something else for you ( I never asked for something different).

Our waiter and his assistant were incredible. They quickly remembered our names. There were six of us at one table. Our glasses were often refilled, our food quickly arrived to us as well as rolls served while waiting.

Breakfast was also awesome. The buffet offers something for pretty much everyone. Biscuits, Gravy, Sausage, Bacon, Eggs, Hashbrowns, French toast, Waffles, Pancakes, Cereal, you name it they have it. My best friend mentioned the last day of the cruise he doesn't care for hashbrowns, but the ones on the ship he absolutely loved!
Tables are quickly cleaned so seating is usually right away.

I had the opportunity to attend a Welcome aboard show that included the Royal Caribbean Singers & Dancers which was a great show. I also attended a show in the Follies theater with comedian Steve Smith as the headliner. He was hilarious. I also went to his late night show for adults which was just as good as the first one. I attended the Captains welcome aboard party where free drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) were offered.

We spent a little time in Casino Royale. It took a little time for us to understand how the machines work as the .25 slots only took cash not coins. When you win any amount you have the choice of continuing with a credit or printing out a coupon to redeem.

The second day on board we were out to CocoCay. The weather was sunny, cool and very breezy. By the late afternoon they had to limit the times for the tenders traveling back and forth from the ship to the island and vice versa because the water was becoming extremely choppy. We had to wait quite awhile to board the ship because the gang plank kept getting pushed up. Two of the crew were very patient and helpful making sure everyone got back on the Sovereign safely.

Checking in and out (going from CocoCay and back) was quick and painless. All of the crew were organized, helpful and friendly. It was crowded yet it was moving at a reasonable pace. You were not standing in one place for very long.

Throughout the day we were informed over the intercom (mostly by Casey, our cruise director) of activities. Our stateroom attendant also left us a cruise compass everyday. We also watched Channel 27 which I highly recommend doing.

Throughout the day we were often greeted by Royal Caribbean staff. Anytime we encountered the staff they were always smiling. It felt good to be acknowledged.

I did have some complications with using internet which is quite pricey at .50 a minute. They did offer a few packages in which I had purchased the $25 one for 60 minutes worth of access. However, access on the desktops on deck 4 was very, very slow and the minutes were quickly getting used up. Because of issues with me signing up I did receive a credit. I went to the guest relations desk and was taken care of quickly no questions asked.

Even though I was told I wouldn't have access to the internet using my laptop in my stateroom my best friend and I tried it out anyways since our room was so close to the Voltage night club which is a hot spot for Wi Fi. It worked so much better !

The music was so much better than I expected. Modern music, classics, latin music among various types were played. You can expect to hear music throughout the day on the cruise ship or the island.

I did a little shopping on board and the stores are okay. I do wish they offered more t shirts for the younger children. It was disappointing to leave without t-shirts for my three kids. They are pricey though for the shirts offered even though I got two for $30 (on sale). Even though the shop was crowded I didn't have to wait very long to checkout.

I wanted to check on my onboard credit so I went to guest relations and didn't wait long. The attendant was very friendly, smiling and helpful. Anytime I had any concerns or questions they were very polite and eager to answer them.

From the first day I had made up my mind I am cruising again very soon. I loved the atmosphere of the Sovereign. The next time though I want to take my family as well.

The last day though I was saddened to know that the Sovereign will only be cruising through the end of October 2008 and then she heads to Europe. Monarch of the Seas will be taking her place when it departs Los Angeles on a 16-night Panama Canal cruise to Miami. The ship will then undergo a scheduled, weeklong dry-dock before it takes the first Port Canaveral guests for three and four-night Bahamas sailings after the first week of November 2008.

I want them as well as others preparing or considering taking a cruise with Royal Caribbean to experience what I did. It was truly the vacation of a lifetime. It was the best one ever for me and the service was awesome.

Here are some words of advice and tips:

-Parking for the 4 night cruise cost us $48 (2007)

-Have all of your paperwork ready before you step in line in the terminal

-Take an extra change of clothes in a carry on bag when boarding

-Be prepared for the security as your carry on items go through the x ray machine

-You will do a lot of walking, going up escalators, standing in line but it doesn't take too long.

-Lunch is offered onboard the ship the day of arrival!

-Rooms are small, but luggage can be stored under the beds and closet space has shelves, desk has a few drawers

-There is an outlet by the desk and in the bathroom

-If you get drinks other than the drink package offered, be prepared for paying a gratuity on top of the price of the drink unless you get it at the pool bar, dining room or one of the lounges! Gratuity was 15% for each drink we purchased from one of the guys walking around at CocoCay or around the pool/Windjammer Café.

-Sovereign of the Seas offers the gratuity package which ended up being $39 per person in our stateroom. Tipping is customary whether on the ship, CocoCay or in Nassau. Make sure you save money for this!

-I recommend purchasing gift certificates ahead of time whether for yourself or another guest cruising with you or just as a gift for someone. You can redeem them for onboard credits on your SeaPass card. (The three of us spent approximately $515 in four days on souvenirs, gratuity package ($120), internet as well as drinks with cups we kept.

-Be prepared to use the stairs much of the time. The elevators can be slow and at times crowded! Majority of the time people on the elevators are generous to make room.

Remember to keep out a change of clothes the night before disembarking! They will tell you to have your luggage tagged and out in the hall before midnight. We ate breakfast early and then prepared to disembark. The line was long but it went very fast. Everyone had various color coded luggage tags (red, tan, blue, etc) .

Another suggestion is to somehow make your luggage unique in some fashion. We borrowed my parents luggage that was solid black. We had to sort through similar ones and wait for 10 minutes for all of our luggage.

From the time we got in line to disembark until we loaded up our vehicle, once again it took us approximately 45 minutes.

If you are looking into taking a cruise with children, this is the best one. I had the opportunity to meet other parents and kids. They have plenty of activities for the kids to do while the adults get to have some fun time. The staff who take care of the kids are highly qualified. As a mom to three kids, I am definitely looking in to taking mine on a cruise soon.

Royal Caribbean has outstanding service that makes you feel welcomed and appreciated for your business. You definitely will feel like royalty on board.

A solo cruise on the Atlantic in December was just what I needed - no phones, no emails, and just many days of lazing around, doing whatever I liked on a brand new ship.. Just perfect!

Since I was traveling solo, I was determined to be outgoing, although that is not my nature. When we arrived at Barcelona Airport, I talked to anyone who looked like a likely prospect for the same cruise. I met Pat and Mike, a nice couple from Connecticut, who had spent the prior week in India, at their son's wedding. They did not like India, and were pleased to be back in civilization. I met another fellow, and then a very proper looking American fellow, none of whom wanted to share a cab to the ship. (Too much luggage, I was told). 20 euros later (with tip), I was at the docks of the sparkling Norwegian Gem. The decoration that look from afar to be flowers on the hull, were gems. I should have guessed that. No fanfare, no lines, and within 5 minutes I was through the duty free area and on board.. The decor was more subdued than most NCL ships, thankfully. Still all turquoise, blue, melon and burgundy was everywhere. The carpet pattern in the hallways is ocean like, and I was later told, the carpet dolphins swim towards the front of the ship to aid in finding your way.

It was 5PM by the time I boarded. I met with our Cruise Critics in the Star Bar at 6PM. A nice bunch of people, but I had the good fortune to sit at a table with two English couples, Wendy and Mike, and Ken and Jean. They were friendly and welcoming. I discovered that Wendy and Mike now lived in Florida, and the other couple in California. After an hour or pleasant conversation, they invited me to dinner, but I declined. I was still dressed in jeans, the one outfit that is not allowed in the fancier dining rooms. They recommended the Blue Lagoon, and I had some good Tex-mex food there. The evening entertainment in the Stardust Theatre was a singer- dancer replica of Sammy Davis Jr, whom I did even like when he was alive. I stayed for the whole show, though and won $54 in an instant win game (Like Lotto scratch off cards) .

Day 2 I really wanted to sleep all day, but with a meet and greet party at 1030, that wasn't possible. All 103 Cruise Critic people were there, and we met some of the staff. I met a few more people whose names I knew from the board. Always nice to associate a face with a name. An art lecture (and one free print later), a Red Hat Lady meeting where I seemed to be the only participant the dinner with Ken and Jean. Ken excused himself and Jean told me her very interesting life story until the wee hours of the morning. Mine is not an eighth as interesting! Everything from the daughter of a chip shop owner, to a single mother after a failed marriage to finding her way to America with her second husband Ken and her then teenage daughter.

Day 3. I slept so late that I missed breakfast. I went to the gym, but with a massive headache, I felt sick and lasted there only a few minutes. I walked by the outdoor pool, and the sunshine was warm, even though we were now in the Atlantic. Bingo for 40 minutes, and I left $35 poorer. A VERY L O NG art auction brought a second free print, but not much else.

Day 4 Funchal our only port of call. Madeira is a jewel rising from the Atlantic with poinsettias on TREES, beautiful orange cone like flowers - aloe. And bougainvillea. The island features a long steep climb to top with volcanic peaks, and Nuns Valley below. It was a beautiful day. At the top of the toboggan run, an accordion player in a white outfit with a Madeira hat entertained us while we waited a few seconds for our sledge to arrive - a two seater flanked by two men in white with jaunty straw hats. The toboggans or sledges were fun, When the slowed or stopped, the men added wax to make them run over slow spots. The photo taken en route showed two large sized women, crammed into the sledge with mouths open. I bought a brightly colored Madeira hat and football jerseys featuring the local hero, who apparently plays for Man United. We returned to the ship just before it left.

Day 5 I was scheduled for a bowling tournament, but arrived ½ hour after it started. What a concept, bowling at sea. The waves did nothing to help my score. We each threw a ball, and the next person finished the frame. My team was easily eliminated on the first try. The highlight of the day was the murder mystery dinners. We were assigned to teams of 6, each with the same story, and led to the Grand Pacific dining room, where we acted out our parts. I played Holly Day, a billionaire's wife on vacation in Hawaii. It certainly kept the conversation going during dinner.

Day 6. Today's evening entertainment, a comedy troupe from Second City were excellent. Ship - excellent, spacious, always being touched up, even only 6 weeks after 1st sailing.

The rest of the journey was blur. I read 3 ½ books. I slept well. The weather on board out on open deck was warm enough to just wear a long sleeved shirt - no coat or vest needed. My overall impression: Food excellent Specialty restaurants Teppenyaki very good (like a Benehana) and the Italian La Cucina was excellent. Do it yourself laundry on board. Entertainment varied, some just okay, some excellent. Room stewards efficient and made fun towel animals nightly.

I would definitely travel on the Norwegian Gem again, and would not hesitate to do a trans-atlantic cruise, even in the dead of winter.

We sailed from Marseille on a Mediterranean cruise with Celebrity, on the Millennium. A business meeting in Dublin caused us to miss the first day of the cruise from Barcelona, but since that was also where the cruise ended, we knew we would see it anyway. Marseille - taxi from airport 40 euros. Arrived in the rain, so tired that we decided to sleep the day away rather than visit Marseilles or nearby Provence.

Dinner companions included a couple from Northern Ireland, a couple from Holland Park in London and another from Miami. Traveling with my best friend was an asset as we moved around the table nightly to talk to the others at the table.

Food. The first night, I was disappointed by the food. Celebrity has such a fine reputation for food that I was expecting more. My cruising experience is not vast to this point, but I was expecting it to be better than Holland America, and it was not. On our first formal night there were only 6 of us rather than 8, and the food was excellent. After a LONG day in Rome, we opted for the buffet dinner, which was fine and filling, but not memorable by any stretch of the imagination. Lunches on board were the usual salads, hot meals, hamburgers and pizza, which the very popular ice cream bar.

Spa: The first day on board, we signed up for everything for our day at sea - classes, lectures, and a pedicure. It was excellent. However, being a day at sea, the only spa appointment to be had was at 8AM, and that early start required that I take a nap (oh the luxury of cruises) late morning to recoup. Our day at sea was event filled, from pedicures to a shopping lecture to an art auction, ribbon rose making, lunch, spa lectures, history lectures and more. We had so many things on our agenda that we missed our Cruise Critic meeting and a few other things as well. Simply too much to do.

Our ports: Villefranche, the port for Nice was alluring, with its typical Cote d Azur landscape of seafront restaurants with their awnings blowing in the breeze, ochre and saffron colored houses stretching up the hillside, citadel and gardens. The charming small town of Villefranche easily occupied us for an afternoon, but fellow travelers marveled at the beautiful hilltop village of Eze, and the ease of taking the train to Monaco or to Nice and Cannes. In half an hour and only for a few euros, you are in the center of Cannes or Monaco.

For Rome, our port was Civitavecchia, well worth a miss on a Sunday. The train to Rome is about an hour and a half from there, but the infrequent train schedule on a Sunday (check Trentitalia before you leave), caused us to wait an hour for the train, and arrive in Rome too late for our appointment at the Villa Borghese, which has Rome's premier collection of masterpieces, including works by Titian, Caravaggio and Raphael.. In any event, by friend was able to talk our way into the fabulous art collection at that late hour, and for free as well. It was raining when we came out, a reason to stay in the museum café and have an overpriced (though typical for Rome) lunch before making our way to St. Peter's. We had both visited previously, so ours was just a quick visit to oogle some of the things we had missed on other occasions.

Afterwards, a taxi to the train station had us arrive, panting, just in time for our train back to the port. A misunderstanding meant that we did not have tickets, and were fined for not having a ticket when boarding, but the whole trip was worth the expense.

Mykonos We docked at 1PM, and took the shuttle to the town for $10 each. We walked around the harbor, mainly browsing the shops, but also seeing the local church and the Catholic church, the windmills, Little Venice, and walking the winding alleyways with the whitewashed houses, agean blue doors and purple bouganvilla. Back on board, the Greek dancers brought on board made the atmosphere more special. We took a shore excursion.

Ephesus - the highlight of the trip. An unusually early departure 715Am for a full day tour that included Mary's House, Ephesus, a museum, and St John's Church. Marys houses was the most solemn and serene place of the day. In the cool air of morning scented by what I believe were laurel trees, it was wonderful. The trek through Ephesus, by contrast was out in the blazing sun (even in May), but was the highlight of our cruise. It was most impressive - from the men's latrine, the library, to the amphitheatre, and more. The museum had many mosaics and statues from the area. St. John's church was interesting as well. I did not care for the rug store we were shown at the end. The vendors in all shops were TOO aggressive.

A lazy day at sea followed, with lectures, art auction, theater, films and more. Palermo. My choice was to give it a miss, and none of the shore excursions sounded interesting. We did explore on pour own, during siesta, when the shops were closed. It was a mistake - I have never seen a dirtier, less friendly city. We walked to the cathedral and the opera house. I should have stayed on board.

Barcelona: Our cruise ended in Barcelona. We chose a late departure from the ship, and took a taxi to the train station. We were able to store our luggage in lockers, and then take a hop on hop off tour of the city right outside the station. The train to the airport was simple and inexpensive, and easy walk to the terminals. The RENFE train service runs approximately every 30 mins to and from Barcelona airport to the city centre. Travel time approximately 25 minutes. You can catch the train from Estacio de Franca, Passeig de Gracia, or Barcelona Sants (otherwise known as Sants Estacion) The name of the stop you want for the airport is Aeropuerto.
