On the other hand, selecting a cruise should be more based on value than price, and there's plenty of value to be had.

For example, you might pay roughly $900 each for two people for a seven day cruise, and in comparison pay roughly the same for a nice land resort. However, the cruise will also offer a "boatload" of food, activities, and entertainment included in the price, while you'll pay additional for these extras at a resort. Of course the cruise will also include accommodations, and won't require a rental car. Hopefully you're starting to see how a cruise is often a better value than a typical resort vacation. Leave the Fear Behind During Your Cruise

A few years back, my parents took their first cruise on a short 4 day excursion to the Mexican Riviera. Several months before taking their cruise, my Father had a very close brush with death from Diverticulosis. He had lost 9 pints of blood through rectal hemorrhaging due to a small fisher somewhere in the intestines. Although he had seen several medical doctors and had multiple x-rays, it was never determined what had caused the massive and uncontrollable bleeding at the time. We later learned (after the cruise) that the smallest seed from a piece of fruit is enough to tear his frail intestines. This cruise on the Royal Caribbean was a celebration of life for my folks as well as their 51st Wedding Anniversary celebration.

On board the cruise ship things were going great, and a beautiful picture was taken of the two of them as they boarded this luxury liner. It was shortly after dinner that something terrible happened.

My parents had just finished up an incredible meal with the Captain when my Father consumed a desert that had blueberries with small seeds which was enough to trigger another serious episode of hemorrhaging. He was rushed to the ships infirmary where the ships doctor did everything possible to stop the hemorrhaging. My Mother was an absolute wreck as my Father was treated by the ships doctor for this potentially deadly situation. They discovered that they would have to pay the whole medical bill up front by credit card and submit the bill later to their insurance company when they returned to shore for reimbursement. Fortunately, the bill did not exceed their maximum credit line.

What they learned from the whole experience was quite interesting. The doctor on board their cruise ship was excellent. He was able to stabilize my Fathers hemorrhaging through the use of blood coagulating medication until they returned to shore. Not only was he able to stabilize my Father, but he was able to calm my Mother and was extremely caring and attentive during the entire experience. He also informed my parents as to what foods my Father should completely avoid from that day forward.

The medication that was administered to my Father while on board worked well enough that there was no need for more extreme measures such as an emergency air lift or to have my Father dropped off in Ensenada Mexico for Hospital treatment while my poor Mother returned to the US port with the ship. He recovered so well that they were both able to enjoy the last day of the cruise and even take a short excursion (the last of 4 excursions) to Ensendada for some shopping.

That was about 7 years ago. To our surprise, my Father recently shared his interest in taking another cruise for 15 days to Hawaii. He hasn't had an episode with Diverticulosis since that last cruise in 2003 and has mastered what foods he can and cannot consume to avoid any further episodes. My Mother, however, is terrified at the thought that something might go wrong. She is so consumed with fear of having a similar experience that she would rather not go on the cruise.

I have shared with her my personal opinion, one that I have developed from traveling with my own Special Needs child. Leave the fear at home. Do some home work - research and educate yourself on the following items, you will be able to overcome the fear, and enjoy a wonderful experience.

Research the age of the ship (typically, newer ships have better medical doctors and equipment)
Learn any information you can about the ships doctor on board
Find out what level of service the on-board clinic is capable of providing
Ask beforehand what foods are provided at the buffets, and other meals
Learn about travel insurance plans that specifically include medical clauses
Carry a credit card with a large line of credit only for those just in case medical expenses
Try to avoid the ships infirmary altogether by being proactive with your medical condition
If you have food restrictions-carry a list of what you can have to reference when you are standing in front of a cruise buffet that may have the ability to dazzle and confuse you
Carry your own medicines
And find out what the procedures and possible expenses are for the worst case scenario

Fear is a terrible destroyer of good times, an enemy of relaxation, and a deadly plague against fun vacationing. Fight fear with knowledge, preparation, and a determined attitude to have fun. Only then can you learn to life to the fullest, no matter whether you are young, or old, healthy or living with disabilities.

But that's all changed, and these days, cruises are extremely popular with honeymooners and couples celebrating their anniversaries. Since honeymoons are a big ticket item, many cruise lines have introduced new amenities and services to make them more attractive to couples.

Many cruise ships now have open seating at dinner, so passengers who don't want to dine with others don't have to. The cruise ships that still have assigned seating have alternative restaurants where love birds can reserve a table for two. On Sea Dream Yacht Club, the two of you can arrange to have dinner table out on deck in the moonlight. And couples aboard Paul Gauguin can arrange a picnic lunch on a private beach.

Vacations should be relaxing and stress-free and a cruise is just the ticket. In order to make that happen, a little planning beforehand is essential for a great cruise. Enjoy these tips for a relaxing time.

Talk to others who have cruised, or a travel agent. They can usually steer you toward the best cruise lines, tell you the differences between cruise lines, help you know which shore excursions are a must, and which are duds.
Set a budget and plan to stay within it. This will not only help you have a great time without worrying about spending money you don't have, but it will also help you stay real. The price of the cruise pays for many things, but not everything. All inclusive cruises usually include food (lots of it) and some non-alcoholic drinks such as tea, coffee and juice. Alcoholic drinks are almost always extra as well as sodas. There are some food venues that are extra as well. If you eat on shore, that's on your dime. While you can debark and go on shore, any activities (shore excursions) are extra.
Make sure all travelers have passports or other acceptable federal re-entry documents. Also, carry photo ID (i.e., driver license) while on shore. You will need these to board the ship.
Pack appropriate clothing. Most cruises, the dress code is casual and depending on the destination. For example, for an Alaskan cruise, casual may be khakis, nice shorts, comfy shirts, etc. while a for Caribbean cruise, swimsuits are the norm for on-deck. Dining rooms almost always want cruise casual or formal. Check your cruise line for details. Also, check the weather forecast for your destinations before cruising and make sure you bring appropriate clothing. Nothing sucks worse than packing only shorts for an Alaskan cruise.
Plan and purchase any shore excursions early as these tend to fill up fast. Usually, no more than one excursion per port allows time for having fun and shopping. If you try to book back-to-back excursions, you may not have enough time. IMPORTANT: Book your excursions through the cruise line. If you do not book your excursion through the cruise line and go off on your own, and your excursion runs too late where you miss the ship, it is your responsibility and expense to either catch up to the ship, or fly home. They will NOT hold the ship for you. However, if you book through the cruise line, most cruise lines will hold the ship for you if the excursion is running late. Verify this with the cruise line to be safe.
If you get motion sick, your doctor can prescribe a remedy for you. My wife swears by the trans-dermal patches that fit right behind your ear and keep you from getting sick. No sense ruining your vacation by being sick.
Don't cut it too close. Make sure you have plenty of time to travel to the departure port, whether by plane, train or automobile. If you are flying, keep in mind that connecting flights can be delayed and bring you in after the ship's departure. I find it better to arrive the day before the ship leaves to allow for these delays. Booking the flight with the cruise line, even though it is more expensive, usually gives you some relief in case of delays as the cruise line will usually fly you to the next port at their expense in case you miss the ship. Check with the cruise line.
When arriving at the pier, allow the porters to take your luggage and tip them (usually $1.00/piece is sufficient) so you don't have to wrestle it on board. They will take it on board where it will be delivered to your stateroom. Make sure you keep important things, like medication, money, credit cards, a book to read, etc. in a carry on that you will keep with you when boarding as it may be several hours before your luggage arrives at your stateroom.
Once on board, you can find your cabin and begin to learn your way around ship. Check your cabin, your dining assignments, etc. to make sure everything matches. If not, visit the customer services desk, usually located on the main deck, where they can correct any problems. Before sailing, there will be a mandatory safety meeting, usually at your muster station (the place to go when the general alarm sounds). It is important to listen carefully, even if you are a frequent cruiser, as things change.
Plan your on board activities. Each day, you will receive a newsletter outlining the next day's activities: shows, movies, contests, etc. These will also usually list the hours of operations of the spas, restaurants, shore excursion desk, etc. Most ships even have channels on the television with information such as weather, pool temps, and even the sea condition. Sea days (where you are sailing and not in port) are great for visiting the pool, spas gyms, and other amenities. They are also good for taking in some shows.
When in port, make sure you take all required documentation with you: passports, cruise card issued by the cruise line, photo ID and any other documentation required. You are usually required to be on-board 30 minutes to an hour before departure time. Watch your time and make sure you are back on board by the required time. Watch especially if you have to take a tender to the ship and make sure you know the last tender time.
Know what you're tipping. Most cruise lines will automatically charge a daily gratuity to your shipboard account. Typically, it is $10 per person per day and is split between the staff so you don't have to tip each individual. It isn't mandatory, but you need to make any adjustments before the last full day where your account is settled. Also, realize that there is usually a 15% gratuity added to any bar purchase, including colas. If you wish to tip extra, please do.

Cruising and What I Pack

One of the questions I'm asked a lot about in my role as an Image Consultant is what to take on a cruise - usually by clients who have never cruised and know that I have.

My first cruise was years ago, so long ago that there were still two class ships, first and second class passengers - I went on holiday on P&O's Oriana (the old one) and I was ruined for life. As a second class passenger we were confined to the back of the ship and there were certain doors we could not go through - still I didn't care - I was young and I had a wonderful time. The next year I went back on the same ship and it had become one class and I could go all over the ship - I couldn't believe how big it was and how much I hadn't seen the year before.

Since then I've cruised again and again and have probably been on well over twenty cruises. I've tried the dress down sort but my preference is for the ships that have formal evenings. To my mind the dressing up is part of the holiday and I'm prepared to put some effort into it. A ship on a warm night at sea with total darkness and just the ocean all around with all the public rooms beautifully lit and furnished, piano music tinkling, champagne flowing and every one in formal dress (even the waiters change their jackets and the crew wear formal attire) is a sight to behold.

I tend to have five requirements if I'm packing to go on a Cruise when I know the weather will be warm. They are:

Daytime on the Ship - For this I prefer lightweight jersey separates, trousers, shorts, t-shirt tops, a light cardigan/jacket. Here you also need to add in swimwear and cover-ups, flip-flops etc. I prefer trainers, or loafers - something with a rubber sole so you don't slip on newly washed decks is ideal.

Daytime in Port - In port, it depends on the weather but if hot it needs to be lightweight - and of natural fibre, whilst some prefer shorts and t-shirts or sundresses, because I burn easily I prefer lightweight baggy crepe trousers and short-sleeved tops. It's also worth considering where you are going as churches abroad generally require that your legs and shoulders are covered. Sandals or comfy shoes essential.

Casual Evening - For these evenings a pair of trousers and a skirt in a neutral colour like navy or stone are ideal and a selections of nice tops and jewellery to dress them up slightly. If you are canny about what you wear and when it's useful to wear a top for the evening and then use it on one of your days in port.

Informal Evening - I see this as a chance to wear day or cocktail dresses (just below the knee) or an evening pair of trousers and dressy top. The chaps will be wearing lounge suits so it fits together quite well. Also if you have good jersey basics you can dress plain styles with costume jewellery and then use the same thing on days in port or casual evenings without the fancy accessories. (ex. A plain black scoop neck dress worn with black patent shoes/bag and silver costume jewellery on an informal evening can easily be worn with white or red on a casual night and sandals and a scarf on a day in port - I make my basics really work for their living).

Formal Evening - This is the time I get out my long dresses and give then an outing - the fellas are all in dinner suits and it's impossible to go over the top. Chiffon and sequins abound. If you are on a two-week cruise and there are four formal evenings it's easy to wear one dress and the beginning of the cruise and again at the end (I may change the look - say that I'd worn a magenta pink dress with silver jewellery/shoes and a sequin bag - I might switch to black accessories or pink ones the next time I wore it - I'd also carry a different shawl, I always take shawls as the air-con can be quite cool in some of the public rooms).

There are no weight restrictions if travelling from this country so it's how much you can reasonable manage to take which will fulfil your needs. If travelling on a cruise for the first time don't worry about the clothes, use my guide and you won't go far wrong. Enjoy!

Cruise Holiday Tips - Try to Limit Yourself to 6 Meals a Day on a Cruise Vacation

I suppose this piece will have been written with tongue only slightly in cheek, but I think that it is something worth considering. When my wife and I planned our next cruise, I had to promise to limit myself to only 6 meals a day. If you have cruised before then you know how much food is available on a cruise. If you have not cruised before, then you will be shocked to find how much food is available on a cruise.

It will be easy to find yourself eating for the entire trip, especially if you are sailing on one of those cruise lines where there is not as much to do, such as Holland America. If you are sailing on Carnival for example, the itinerary might keep you active enough that you will not think about eating as much.

On one of our more memorable cruises, on board the Holland America Line Zuiderdam, my constant refrain was, there is nothing going on right now, lets go to the Lido Deck. The Lido Deck, by the way, is where the buffet is.

So here is my plan for the next one, only six meals a day.

Meal number 1: First Breakfast. I like to rise early and watch the sun come up. Usually I awake early enough that there is no breakfast except for coffee and pastry.

Meal number 2: Second Breakfast. Breakfast in the dining room. Not many people are aware that the dining room is usually available for breakfast. This is the same efficient, friendly table service that you are accustomed to for dinner in the evening, the only difference is that now they are service eggs Benedict, and french toast.

Meal number 3: Third Breakfast. Omelet on the Lido deck. This will be the greatest omelet you have ever eaten, made to order and hot and fresh. Garnish it with homefries and bacon if you wish.

Meal number 4: Lunch on the Lido deck. Since you have had your three breakfasts you should be able now to hold off until lunch. I recommend loading up on the fruits and vegetables in anticipation of what is coming up for meal number 5.

Meal number 5: Either a hamburger and fries or Pizza but not both. Here is where the temptation really is. Carnival has the best pizza I have ever eaten, while princess has the best hamburger and fries. The problem is that it is too easy to be tempted to stop and have whatever you want whenever you want simply because it is there. My advice is to save yourself for meal number 6.

Meal number 6: Dinner in the Dining Room. If you have never cruised, then you do not know yet that dinner in the dinning room is like dining in a five star restaurant, except that you do not have to wait around for the bill. You definitely do not want to stuff yourself with hamburger and pizza when you have lobster and beef wellington waiting for you in the dining room.

Having a passport is an absolute necessity on a world cruise. If you travel to a country requiring one, you have to present it before getting onboard the flight or the cruise ship. As of June 1, 2009 a passport is going to be required for all travel into or out of the United States of America.

Dining Aboard
On the larger upscale world cruises and even those that do not travel the farthest of distances, you'll most likely have three or more dining location options. Usually there is a main dining room, an alternative such as a fancy restaurant, a cafeteria, a buffet or two for breakfast and lunch, and room service. Typically an extra charge applies when you use the alternate restaurant, however. There are normally two different times available for dinner in the main dining area. The earlier sitting takes place at about six o'clock p.m. and the later one is around eight o'clock p.m. When you are in port and traveling off of the boat it may be best to request the later time to allow more time to dress and get ready for dinner. Of course, the cruise line is a business just like any other, and they are very good at extracting money from you. In a previous article, I outlined the 3 best free things that you can do to enhance your cruise. You should read that article if you have not already. But the topic of this one is to learn how to save money on your cruise by learning where the traps are.

The biggest money trap is obvious, it is the sign and sail card. For those who have not cruised yet, the sign and sail card is issued to every adult on the cruise. You can use it in place of cash on the cruise ship , and just pay the bill at the end of your vacation. You can use it everywhere: In the bar, the gift shop, the casino and coffee shop, just to name a few.

The problem is that it is just like a credit card. Statistically, we will spend 18% more if we only use credit cards because we do not think of it as spending money. The same is true with your sign and sail card. The challenge is that in most places on a ship, you cannot pay cash even if you want to. You cannot hand the waitress any cash on the lido deck, unless you are giving her an additional tip, even the tips are added to the card.

The best way to handle it is to identify the places that you can pay cash and resolve to pay cash there: The casinos, bingo, and tips to the room steward, and dining room waiters are all places where you can and should pay cash.

In addition, I always go to the Pursers desk at least two or three times to pay down my room bill. This reduction in the cash in my wallet is a not too subtle reminder of how much I am spending.

More people are going on cruises. If you think that this is just for couples, think again because Disney World cruises promises to make this a fun filled vacation for the entire family.

Disney world cruises set sail to the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico. Since these destinations are quite close to the mainland, most of these last for just a few days.

Most packages last 8 days and 7 nights with the first 3 days at the amusement park before you get to board the ship. Those who want to stay longer can avail either of the Mediterranean or transatlantic adventures as well.

Unlike other cruises liners, Disney World is quite new in the business and they only have 2 vessels. These are namely the Wonder and the Magic. Both of these have similar features and amenities on board that can hold 2400 guests each. There are plans to add two more ships to the fleet that can hold about 4,000 passengers by 2011 or 2012.

Each night on board one of these ships promise to be different because guests will experience a rotational dining system. This means you will get to eat in one of three dining rooms nightly while most only offer this in one large room.

Meals are already included in the package so the only thing you have to spend for will be drinks. You can avoid this by bringing some on board for the entire trip.

Despite the large number of passengers, you will notice that the state rooms and suites are not cramp making it possible to hold 5 passengers.

There are many things to do on board and to help you out, they have counselors that plan games and other activities. For those who want to spend some time away from the kids, you can ask the crew to assign someone to babysit them.

Given the popularity of Disney World cruises, customers are advised to book their trip at least 6 months in advance. On the day of your departure, make sure you are there at least 2 hours before because they make it a point to leave on time. If you miss your boat, they will try to make arrangements for you to meet up at the port where the ship will be docking. Should there be weather problems, the trip will be rescheduled at a later date.

One thing you should keep in mind when you go for a Disney World cruise or any other is to bring your passport. You are leaving US territory and you have to show this to the customs agent when you make a port call.
